Humber was founded by Thomas Humber, who set up a cycle making factory in Beeston, Nottinghamshire in1870. By 1887, two more factories had been established, one in Wolverhampton, the other in Coventry. The first motorized vehicle was made in 1896 at the Coventry factory, and the first commercially viable Humber car was produced at the turn of the century. In 1928 the company merged with Hillman, and in the early 1930's the Rootes Group gained control. Our Humber 12 is one of only 11 examples known to the Post Vintage Humber Club and only five of these are actually on the road today. 1949 Daimler Consort 2.5L Limousine Daimler was the first company to commercially manufacture motorcars in Britain in 1896. In 1908 a new factory was built in the Radford area of Coventry, and in 1910 B.S.A amalgamated with Daimler, ensuring financial security. Daimler was to become one of the most successful of all British marques, it's luxury cars having a reputation rivalling Rolls Royce and Bentley. In 1960 Jaguar acquired Daimler, and continues to use the Daimler name for its top of the range cars. |
